South Side Community Garden Planted

Congratulations to all of the new South Side gardeners. Saturday June 2 was the official planting day at the Bandi Schaum Community Garden in South Side Park.

Here are the results of our community labor:

Now, we just have to wait for the harvest!

If you don’t have a plot at the garden, there is still at least 1 way to be involved. The Public Allies Pittsburgh group has partnered with Voices Against Violence (a high school youth group) to create “Veggies Against Violence.” This great group of kids is learning to grow vegetables at the community garden and could use all of our help. If you want to get involved, email Tom at tsamilson at gmail.com

The bums are at it again. Some chairs that were stolen have reappeared in the back of the field that is above Bandi Shaum garden. Today, there is a tent pitched right on the edge of the cliff with what looks like an illegal immigrant inhabiting the tent. In light of the recent vandalization of the garden fence, graffiti and theft of private property, it may be warranted for everyone to start taking a proactive approach to these bums. Take a walk around the field above the garden and if you see encampments or the beginnings thereof, call the police. Take turns watching the garden late night if you can. We need to work together to keep the bums at bay, thwart theft of water chairs etc. and most importantly, prevention of pilfering or destruction of the garden contents.
