Do you love to garden? Are you excited to show off your green thumb this year? Then enter the South Side Slopes Flower Contest, open to all Slopes residents!
Focusing on the front-facing façade of your home, we will have $100 giftcard prizes for:
Best Simple Planter – for those with little space but go above and beyond with a single pot or window box
Best Front Garden – for those who have more than a simple planter and want to go all in
Most Popular – where your vote will determine the best out there!
The space must be at least 80% green (we love a good statue but we want to see your green thumbs at work.) Also, it must be visible from the street or a public space.
Submissions must be in by Sunday, July 28th, with garden spaces to be ready to photograph by Friday, August 9th. Photographs would likely be taken over the weekend of August 9th, or the next sunny day.

The South Side Slopes Flower Contest aims to beautify the neighborhood and showcase the gardening talents of our residents. Whether you have a small space or a grand front garden, we want to celebrate your efforts and inspire others in our community. By participating in the contest, you can contribute to a more vibrant and welcoming neighborhood for everyone.
On Saturday, Oct. 15, 2022 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. we need a bit of your elbow grease to help beautify the hillside at the corner of Barry & Mission Streets. Through the City of Pittsburgh, the South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association was awarded a Love Your Block grant to beautify the site. Join neighbors to work by preparing the ground, plant flowering shrubs and perennials and spread mulch. We also hope to level a spot near the top of the hillside and build/place a sitting bench. Join us and bring a friend or three. Lunch is provided!
Please join us (rain or shine) for a community gathering at a private and extraordinary garden in our South Side neighborhood for an afternoon of socialization, wine, hors d’oeuvres, and chamber music to benefit the progress being made to improve South Side Park for all to share and enjoy!
Did you know there are multiple war memorials on the South Side Slopes?
Along 103-105 Pius Street, you can see the “All Wars Memorial”. This memorial was restored with an Elm Street grant in 2007 with new landscaping, sidewalk, fencing, and a flagstone.
Additionally, there are 2 honor rolls in the South Side Slopes. One is on Mission Street across from St Josephat’s church. Another is at the intersection of 18th St and Quarry St. For a full list of Pittsburgh memorials, click here.
Congratulations to all of the new South Side gardeners. Saturday June 2 was the official planting day at the Bandi Schaum Community Garden in South Side Park.
Here are the results of our community labor:
Now, we just have to wait for the harvest!
If you don’t have a plot at the garden, there is still at least 1 way to be involved. The Public Allies Pittsburgh group has partnered with Voices Against Violence (a high school youth group) to create “Veggies Against Violence.” This great group of kids is learning to grow vegetables at the community garden and could use all of our help. If you want to get involved, email Tom at tsamilson at gmail.com
This Saturday May 5, a lot of volunteers put in a lot of work to prepare the South Side Community Garden for planting. Thanks to everyone who came out and helped. Hope to see all of you and more back for our last garden work day on Saturday May 12 from 9am to 2pm.
South Side Community Council and the South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association invite you to a Grow Pittsburgh Education Session: MINI GARDEN PRIMER. Monday, February 27th at the Brashear Association from 6pm to 8pm.
“Don’t know the first thing about vegetable gardening, but want to learn? Never even picked up a spade? Fear not – Our Mini Garden Primer will cover all the basics, including which tools beginner gardeners will need, what and where to plant, and when to harvest. In addition, those taking part in the course will be given step-by-step instruction on everything from starting a compost to properly transplanting seedlings.”
This workshop is open to the public. In addition, anyone interested in getting a garden plot in the new South Side Community Garden at Bandi Shaum Field should sign up at http://www.pittsburghpa.gov/publicworks/gardenplots/.
